October is one of the best months to be in and around Littleton, Colorado. The summer crowds thin out, the cottonwoods along the South Platte turn gold, the air gets crisp, and the calendar fills with harvest festivals, pumpkin patches, and free outdoor activities. Here is a guide to free and low-cost things to do in and around Littleton this October 2026, organized by week and category.

    Free Outdoor Activities

Fall Foliage on the South Platte River Trail

All October | Free | Downtown Littleton trailhead access

The South Platte River Trail runs right through Littleton, and October is when the cottonwoods along the river turn a deep gold. The paved, flat trail is free to access and connects to the Mary Carter Greenway and the Carson Nature Center. Park at the Littleton Downtown Station or along Prince Street and walk either direction. For the best color, go mid-October when the cottonwoods are at peak. The trail is dog-friendly (leashed) and fully accessible.

Roxborough State Park: Red Rocks and Fall Color

All October | $10 day pass or State Parks pass | 4751 E. Roxborough Dr., Roxborough

Roxborough State Park, about 25 minutes south of Littleton, is a National Natural Landmark with some of the most dramatic red rock formations on the front range. The Fountain Valley Trail is a 2.3-mile loop that winds through the centerpiece valley. In October the scrub oak along the trails turns rust and amber against the red sandstone. Arrive before 10:00 AM on weekends; the parking lot fills and the park temporarily closes to entry when it does. A $10 day pass per vehicle is required, but the hiking itself is the experience.

Chatfield State Park: Reservoir and Cottonwoods

All October | $10 day pass or State Parks pass | 10000 N. Roxborough Park Rd., Littleton

Chatfield State Park, about 15 minutes south of Downtown Littleton, offers miles of trails, the Chatfield Reservoir, and off-leash dog swim areas. October is one of the best months here: the cottonwoods along the Platte turn gold, the water is still warm enough for paddling, and the afternoon crowds are gone. The gravel trails along the river corridor are flat and accessible. A $10 day pass per vehicle applies, but walking the trails along the perimeter is the draw.

Lariat Loop Scenic Byway: Free Fall Drive

All October | Free | Golden to Morrison via Colorado State Highway 74

The Lariat Loop Scenic Byway is a 40-mile loop connecting Golden, Morrison, Evergreen, and Lookout Mountain. October is peak fall color along the route, with aspen groves and cottonwoods lighting up the canyons. The drive itself is free. Stop at Lookout Mountain for panoramic views of the Denver skyline and the plains. From Littleton, the drive to Golden takes about 20 minutes and the full loop takes roughly two hours with stops.

    Free Community Events & Markets

    Southwest Plaza Farmers' Market

Saturdays through October | 8:00 AM | Southwest Plaza, Littleton | Free to attend

Colorado farmer-owned and operated since 1977, the Southwest Plaza Farmers' Market runs Saturday mornings through the fall. October brings Palisade apples, Olathe corn, roasted green chiles, local honey, winter squash, and pumpkins alongside baked goods and craft vendors. Arrive early for the best selection. Parking is free and plentiful in the Southwest Plaza lots. Free to browse; you only pay for what you buy.

    Downtown Littleton Cider Festival

    Saturday, October 11 | 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM | Downtown Littleton Main Street | Free admission

The Downtown Littleton Cider Festival brings Colorado cideries and apple vendors to Main Street for a free community event. Live music, food trucks, family activities, and local cider tastings. Cider tasting flights are ticketed, but walking the festival, listening to the music, and browsing the vendor booths is free. Parking is in the city lots along Prince Street and Alamo Avenue. Downtown is walkable once you park.

    Littleton Museum: Free Admission Year-Round

    Tuesdays - Sundays | 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM | 6028 S. Gallup St., Littleton | Free

The Littleton Museum is one of the few museums in the Denver metro that is free every day it is open. The 39-acre campus includes a living history farm with 1860s and 1890s farmhouses, heritage livestock, and the main museum building with rotating exhibitions on local history. October is a good time to visit: the farm animals are active in the cooler weather, and the grounds have mature cottonwoods and a small lake. Closed Mondays and city holidays.

Downtown Littleton Trick-or-Treat on Main Street

    Saturday, October 25 | 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM | Downtown Littleton Main Street | Free

Downtown Littleton businesses open their doors for a free, family- friendly trick-or-treat along Main Street. Costumes are encouraged, and the historic downtown blocks between Prince Street and Santa Fe Drive fill with families, local shops handing out candy, and seasonal decorations. Free to attend; no tickets required. Park in the city lots on Prince Street or Alamo Avenue.

Free Museum Days in Denver (Accessible via Light Rail)

Denver Art Museum: Free First Saturday

    Saturday, October 4 | 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM | 100 W. 14th Ave. Parkway, Denver | Free

The Denver Art Museum offers free admission on the first Saturday of each month. October's free day is Saturday, October 4. The museum's fall exhibitions include contemporary Indigenous art and a traveling architecture design show. The building itself, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is worth the visit. Reserve timed-entry tickets in advance on the DAM website; free day tickets often book out. From Littleton, take the D Line or C Line light rail from Littleton Downtown Station to Union Station, then transfer to the mall shuttle or a short walk.

Denver Museum of Nature & Science: Free Day

    Monday, October 13 | 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM | 2001 Colorado Blvd., Denver | Free (verify date)

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science offers free admission days throughout the year. Check the official DMNS website for the confirmed October 2026 free date and reserve timed entry in advance. The museum includes planetarium shows, a wildlife hall, and rotating special exhibitions. Accessible via light rail to the Colorado Station and a short transfer, or about a 25-minute drive from Littleton.

    Denver Botanic Gardens: Free Days

Select dates in October | 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM | 1007 York St., Denver | Free on select days

The Denver Botanic Gardens at the York Street campus offers free admission days throughout the year, and the Chatfield Farms location in Littleton hosts its own free days during harvest season. October is a particularly good time to visit: the gardens' maple and oak collections show fall color, and the Chihuly glass sculptures remain installed among the plantings. Check the Botanic Gardens website for the specific October 2026 free dates and reserve timed entry.

Harvest & Pumpkin Patches (Free or Low-Cost Entry)

Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms: Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch

September 20 - October 31 | 8500 W. Deer Creek Canyon Rd., Littleton | Free entry on select days; corn maze tickets $15-$20

Chatfield Farms, the Littleton outpost of the Denver Botanic Gardens, runs a 10-acre corn maze and pumpkin patch through October. The farm itself has free admission on select days during the fall season; the corn maze and some activities are ticketed. Check the Chatfield website for free-entry dates and current ticket prices. The farm is about 15 minutes south of Downtown Littleton and has free parking. The pumpkin patch is a genuine working farm, not a pop-up lot.

    Anderson Farms: Fall Harvest Festival

September 25 - October 31 | 6728 Colorado Blvd., Erie | Free entry; activities ticketed

Anderson Farms in Erie, about 45 minutes north of Littleton, is one of the largest fall festival sites on the front range. Admission to the grounds is free; you pay for the corn maze, wagon rides, and activities if you choose. The pumpkin patch itself is walkable without tickets. The farm has a 25-acre corn maze, a pumpkin cannon, and a kid's zone. It is a longer drive but a genuine farm experience, not a commercial pop-up. Check the website for current ticket prices and hours.

Four Mile Historic Park: Pumpkin Harvest Festival

    Saturday-Sunday, October 11-12 | 715 S. Forest St., Denver | Free admission (verify)

Four Mile Historic Park, Denver's oldest standing structure, hosts a Pumpkin Harvest Festival with pumpkin picking, historic demonstrations, craft vendors, and family activities. The festival is traditionally free to attend, with pumpkins and food available for purchase. Verify the current admission policy on the Four Mile Park website. About 25 minutes north of Littleton via University Boulevard.

    Practical Notes for October

    • Weather: October in Littleton typically brings sunny days in the 60s and 40s at night, with the first frost possible by mid-month. Afternoon thunderstorms are rare, but high- wind days are common. Check the forecast and bring a layer, especially for evening events and mountain drives.
    • State Parks passes: Both Roxborough and Chatfield require a $10 day pass per vehicle or a Colorado State Parks annual pass. Roxborough's lot fills by late morning on weekends; arrive early or have a backup plan.
    • Free museum days: The Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and Botanic Gardens all require advance timed-entry reservations for free days. Reserve on each museum's official website a week or more ahead.
    • Parking Downtown: The city lots on Prince Street and Alamo Avenue are free on weekends and are the closest reliable parking to Main Street events. Street parking along Main Street fills by mid-morning on Saturdays.
    • RTD Light Rail: The D Line and C Line serve Downtown Littleton at the Littleton Downtown Station. For free museum days in Denver, the light rail is a reliable alternative to driving and parking downtown. Day passes are under $6.
    • Fall color timing: Cottonwoods along the South Platte typically peak in mid-October, while the aspen groves in the mountains peak early to mid-October. The Lariat Loop and foothills drives are best the first two weekends; the river trail is best the middle two weeks.

    Enjoy October in Littleton

October is when Littleton feels most like itself: the air is crisp, the river trail glows gold, the farmers market is full of squash and apples, and Main Street fills with harvest festivals and trick-or- treaters. Almost everything on this list is free or under $20 per person, and the paid activities (state parks, corn mazes) are genuinely worth the entry fee.
