How to Find a Home with a Second Kitchen in Littleton, CO

The short answer: The MLS has no filter for second kitchens. These homes are found by manually reviewing listing descriptions and photos for features like kitchenettes in walk-out basements, in-law suites with full baths, and detached casitas. Bryan searches the MLS this way across Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Ken Caryl, and the southwest metro. You can request a targeted search through the multigenerational home finder form.
Why a second kitchen is so hard to search for
Standard MLS search filters cover price, bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, and property type. They do not cover second kitchens. A home with a full kitchenette in the basement, a wet bar with a cooktop in an in-law suite, or a complete kitchen in a detached casita will not appear in any filtered search for that feature. The information is buried in the listing description, the photos, or the agent remarks — and sometimes it is not mentioned at all.
That gap is why most buyers searching for multigenerational homes end up scrolling through hundreds of listings that do not match. The features they need are there, but the search tools cannot surface them.
Where second kitchens appear in Littleton-area homes
Across Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Ken Caryl, Roxborough, and Sterling Ranch, second kitchens show up in four common configurations:
- Walk-out basement apartments. A lower level with direct exterior access, full-size windows, a kitchenette, a bedroom, and a full bath. Common on sloped lots throughout the foothills communities.
- In-law suites. An attached living area with a private entrance, a kitchenette or wet bar with cooktop, a bedroom, and a full bathroom. REcolorado sometimes flags this as a property feature.
- Detached casitas or ADUs. A separate structure on the property with its own kitchen, bath, and entrance. These are more common in newer communities and larger-lot properties.
- Next Gen and dual-suite new construction. Builder floor plans designed from the start with two distinct living areas under one roof, each with its own kitchen or kitchenette. Active in Sterling Ranch and other Douglas County developments.
Second kitchen vs. wet bar: why the distinction matters
Not every listing that mentions a kitchen actually has one. A wet bar with a sink and a mini-fridge is not the same as a second kitchen with a cooktop, counter space, and food storage. If independent meal preparation is the goal, the difference is significant. Bryan reviews listing photos and descriptions to distinguish a functional second kitchen from a beverage bar, so you do not waste time on homes that look right but are not.
Can you add a second kitchen to a home you buy?
Adding a second kitchen depends on zoning. Inside the City of Littleton, regulations determine whether a second kitchen is permitted in a single-family zone and whether it triggers accessory dwelling unit requirements. In unincorporated Jefferson County and Douglas County, separate rules apply. Lot size, setbacks, and utility connections all factor in. Before buying a property with the intent to add a second kitchen, verify current zoning with the local planning department. Bryan can help identify properties where a second kitchen is already permitted or where adding one is feasible.
Other features to look for alongside a second kitchen
A second kitchen works best when paired with the features that make a separate living area functional. If this is on your list, also look for:
- A separate or private entrance
- A main-floor primary suite
- A walk-out basement with full-size windows
- Dual primary suites
- A detached accessory dwelling unit
The multigenerational home finder form lets you select all the layout features that matter to you, plus your target areas, price range, and timeline. Bryan reviews the MLS manually for the combinations you choose.
Want a curated list of homes with a second kitchen?
Because the MLS does not tag second kitchens, the only way to find these homes is to search manually. Tell Bryan which layout features you need and which areas you are considering. He reviews listing photos and descriptions to identify homes that actually have a functional second kitchen — and sends you the matches.
